We need a sanctuary where the silence of the landscape provides a respite that a "shopping mall" of grass simply cannot offer.
Hosting a podcast built around entrepreneur interviews gave me a front row seat to failure, more than success, honestly. The founders who made it weren't the smartest people in the room. They were the ones who treated setbacks as data instead of verdicts. Every guest who eventually built something lasting could point to a specific moment they almost quit. What separated them wasn't grit in the abstract, it was one small decision to take the next step anyway. That's the pattern I now look for in every mentee I work with.
When we set out to build Menteeo, most networking platforms treated mentorship as an afterthought, a badge on a profile rather than the core experience. We flipped that. Great design leadership isn't about having the best eye, it's about building systems that let good taste scale across a team. Early in my career I tried to review every pixel myself. It didn't work. The moment I started documenting principles instead of decisions, my teams started shipping better work without me in the room. Second, hire for curiosity over polish. Deep design work doesn't happen between meetings, it happens in the space you create around them.
For most of my career I thought mentoring was something you did once you'd 'made it.' I was wrong. The best conversations I've had with mentees weren't about my accomplishments, they were about the mistakes I made along the way and how I recovered from them.
